Dallas Cowboys vs. Las Vegas Raiders Preview, Predictions, and How to Watch

Monday Night Football features a game between two teams looking to snap losing streaks as the 3-5-1 Dallas Cowboys travel to Sin City to take on the 2-7 Las Vegas Raiders. The Cowboys are hoping to bounce back from their Monday night disappointment in Week Nine, while the Silver and Black look to end their three-game losing streak.
The Raiders have arguably been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season. No game was more frustrating than the 10-7 loss they suffered at the hands of the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football last week. Despite the loss, head coach Pete Carroll said that he was proud of his guys.
“We came into this game with the thought that we’re going against a terrific team, playing really well at home on a roll,” he said during the postgame press conference. “I was so fired up about the way we played in general… There’s a lot of in-between things to talk about, but the way that they competed was just what we’re hoping for. It’s just what we’re looking for.”
Overall, the Cowboys’ offense ranks third in yards per game (378.4) and tied for third in points per game (29.2). The passing attack, which ranks first in passing yards per game (257.8), is the lifeblood of that unit.
“He’s (Dak Prescott) got terrific receivers around him. They’ve continued to build this offensive line. They’re big, and they like ‘em,” Pete Carroll said during a November 11th interview. “Javonte’s given them an aggressive running game. So, he’s got what he needs. That offense is one of the top-ranked offenses in the NFL… They should be very excited about their program because the offense is doing what they’re counting on. Defense is being kind of reconstructed, and I think they’ll have a great future with (Brian Schottenheimer) at the helm.”
It has been a tough couple of weeks for the Cowboys, who lost to the Arizona Cardinals last time out by a final score of 27-17. After that, the ‘Boys had two weeks to ruminate on that loss and prepare for this matchup tonight against Las Vegas.
“There’s things that we need to do, from tightening up our coverage, our eyes, [and] things like that. That’s why this week is so important for us,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters on November 5th. “I keep referencing it, but this week is very important for us as a staff because there’s a lot of questions that we have to answer, and there’ll be a lot of deep dives into every phase. First [and] second down, third down, short yardage, goal line, red zone, two-minute, four-minute, backed up. Those are all areas that we have to look into.”
This will be the Cowboys’ first game since the trade deadline, when they made blockbuster moves for former Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson. The hope in Dallas is that those guys will improve the team’s 31st-ranked defense.
“Both those guys are veterans,” Schottenheimer said last Thursday. “The good news is Quinnen obviously knows A-dub (Aaron Whitecotton). He’s been around A-dub, so there’s some translation there. Logan’s very, very bright. He’s been around football for a long time. I’ve just been blown away by both Logan and uh Quinnen’s professionalism. You talk about two guys excited to come into a new program, new situation.”
This will be an emotionally-charged game for several reasons. Most notably, this is the first matchup for the Cowboys since the tragic passing of second-year defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, who died on November 8th.
“I’m excited to get back out there and just do what I love to do with the people I love doing it with. I think the players feel that way,” Schottenheimer said. “We had good energy this morning in the meetings. The meetings were very productive, and – like I said yesterday – we’re ready to get this week underway and put our best foot forward getting ready to honor Marshawn.”
“We’re going to move forward. We’re going to move forward to carry on his legacy,” Dak Prescott told reporters. “Just everything that we can do, [we’re] just trying to do it to the best we can.”
Prediction for Dallas Cowboys (-3.5) @ Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders basically have nothing to play for, while the Cowboys have everything to play for, as proven by the recent acquisitions they made at the trade deadline. For that reason, Dallas should be favored in this matchup. They should also be favored because they have a top-flight passing attack, and the Raiders are only so-so when it comes to defending the pass (16th in passer rating allowed). Though the ‘Boys struggle at forcing takeaways, the Raiders have a hard time holding onto the ball (tied for eighth in giveaways), so Dallas’ defense should be able to generate a turnover or two, especially with Geno Smith at the helm. Despite all of these factors, Vegas still figures out a way to cover the spread.
Prediction: Cowboys 30 – 28 Raiders
